The United Way of Tuscarawas County will hold Brews, Burgers and Barbecue, a major fundraiser for the organization, on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Kent State University at Tuscarawas from 2-5 p.m.

The cost is $50 per person. Eight breweries and five food vendors will make sure everyone gets plenty to eat and drink that day.

“Last year was our first for this,” United Way President and CEO Robin Waltz said. “Our events committee wanted to create a new outdoor event after COVID had kept everyone inside and apart for so long. We wanted to do something that was outdoors. At the same time, craft breweries have really exploded. We thought it would be a great way to bring people out to support local brewers and small businesses. Restaurants and breweries were hit so hard by the pandemic. We wanted to help them get back up and running in some way.”

“Weather permitting, it’s still an outdoor event this year,” United Way community resources manager Susan Reidenbach said. “There will be a big tent at parking lot A. The university has been very cooperative and helpful in planning everything.”

Live music will be provided by popular local band, The LYDSS. Brewers in attendance include Codex, Five Barrel Bullet, Hoodletown, Lockport, Millersburg, Paradigm Shift, R. Shea and Wooly Pig. Each attendee will get a complimentary, commemorative tasting glass, which they can use to visit each of the breweries on hand to try any beer they’d like to sample.

“There will be a good variety of beers to try,” Waltz said. “The brewers all work so well together in collaborating their efforts that they check with each other to make sure they don’t duplicate what they bring.”

Food samples will be handled by Park Street Pizza, Sublime Smoke, Texas Roadhouse, Your Pizza Shop and Grinders.

“It was a very successful fundraiser last year,” Waltz said. “We actually got a lot of great feedback from the brewers because things went so smoothly. We weren’t able to have any fundraisers in 2020, so this was our way to get back into that mission. The brewers are big supporters of United Way, and we just can’t thank them enough for their efforts in putting this together. We really couldn’t do it without them.”

“Of course, by law, no one from the brewery is able to serve beer that day, so we have volunteers to do that,” Reidenbach said.

“The breweries will have people there, of course,” Waltz said. “They’ll be able to talk about the beers they’re serving and answer any questions people may have.”

Last year’s feedback brought about an addition for 2022. “We learned that many people like to have a T-shirt to keep from events like this,” Waltz said. “So we have a T-shirt available this year which you can order when you buy tickets online.”

T-shirts are just $18.

Tickets are presale only and are available at www.tuscunitedway.org/events. A limited number of tickets are available.

“Advance ticket sales makes planning much easier for all of us,” Waltz said.

Brews, Burgers and Barbecue is open to adults only. The event is sponsored by Dover-Phila Federal Credit Union.

“Brews, Burgers and Barbecue was so much fun last year,” Waltz said. “We are pleased to be able to offer it again this year. The community is always very supportive of the United Way, and we appreciate that very much. This is a fun way to help us make sure we are able to keep doing what we do here.”
