WCHD releases suicide report

The Wayne County Health Department has released a suicide report within Wayne County on its website at https://www.wayne-health.org. This report also looks at 2020 and 2021 and compares them to the five years prepandemic.

The report looks at various demographic factors to describe those who Wayne County has lost to suicide.

“While it is easy to point to the COVID-19 pandemic and the isolation that occurred as a precaution to stop the spread of the virus, the reality is that we have seen suicides trending upward prior to the pandemic,” Wayne County health commissioner Nicholas Cascarelli said. “That’s not to say that COVID-19 didn’t play any part. I’m sure it did, but it’s important to note we have been going in the wrong direction with suicides even prior.”

If you would like more information about suicide prevention or if anyone has lost a loved one to suicide, the Wayne County Health Department encourages you to call NAMI of Wayne and Holmes County at 330-264-1590 for support and resources.
