State Rep. Brett Hillyer and State Sen. Jay Hottinger worked with the Village of Dennison to submit a request for the community room project.

The project was submitted into the state’s construction budget and secured $95,000 in funding for Dennison’s community auditorium, The Railroad Room, to make it accessible for individuals who use a wheelchair.

The community room was built on the top floor of the building in 1921 for community use. It fell into disrepair in the 1990s and was used for storage until 2020 when citizens and local businesses gave donations to restore it.

With private donations the walls and ceiling were fixed, new LED lighting was installed, and the electrical and emergency lighting and panic doors were updated. The walls were painted, and the original maple wood flooring was restored, a $37,000 investment.

Even with the improvements, the auditorium remained inaccessible to individuals who use a wheelchair. This funding will allow a wheelchair-accessible ramp on the outside of the building, which will lead to chair lifts that will give access to the auditorium.

It also will provide wheelchair-accessible restrooms and expand the ability to use it for community clubs, groups and nonprofit events.
