Why wait for Christmas Dec. 25 when the joy of Christmas is coming directly to Holmes County starting Nov. 19?

A time-honored tradition helps ignite the Christmas season with the annual Victorian House Holiday at the Mansion that will take place Nov. 20 through Dec. 31 in Millersburg.

The Holmes County Historical Society and volunteers at the Victorian House are excited about what should be another enjoyable Christmas season, with a unique theme added to this year’s showcase.

“We have completely redesigned our decorating plans this season and this year will be better than ever,” said Mark Boley, Holmes County Historical Society executive director.

The new theme will be “Songs of the Season.”

Once again, the Victorian House and Holmes County Historical Society volunteers will have transformed the mansion into a Christmas spectacular event, and this year’s theme brings with it a new appeal to the annual Christmas celebration.

This year the decorating theme is “Songs of the Season,” with each room assigned a favorite Christmas Carol favorites like “White Christmas,” “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “Little Drummer Boy,” and “Frosty the Snowman.” Many other timeless classics could show up in one of the many mansion rooms.

“Our decorators are going to use three elements from whatever song is chosen to represent that particular room,” Boley said. “From the moment people enter they will be transported to a magical holiday display. We’re really excited about the new theme this year because it opens so many neat possibilities and each will have its own unique flair and flavor.”

He said the HCHS has created signs and framed music of each Christmas carol that look aged, and that will add to the elegance of the decorated Christmas rooms.

The volunteers decorating the mansion are enjoying having the opportunity to use their creativity in developing a themed room. At one time, the HCHS invited area businesses and organizations to decorate a room for the event, but that changed right before COVID, and since then volunteers from the HCHS have taken on the decorating role,. That allows the HCHS to create memorable choices like this year’s Christmas song theme.

The inside of the Victorian House isn’t the only part of the property receiving a complete Christmas makeover. The outside landscape and yard will see the return of more than 15 live pine trees decorated with more than 15,000 lights.

Boley said Lowe’s of Wooster and New Philadelphia have both been generous in donating lighting for the outside area, and Boley expects the 15 Christmas trees lit up in a blanket of glowing white lights to be a huge draw for people enjoying the Christmas atmosphere.

He added that Semen Corporation was also instrumental in furthering the effort, along with Haudenschild Insurance and several other individual contributors who purchased many of the decorations last year that will again adorn the mansion.

“It’s the same decorations with a new twist,” Boley said. “Our hope is that we can have the individual songs playing in some or most of the rooms.

The “Songs of the Season” Victorian House open house event will take place Saturday, Nov. 19, when the holiday season starts with a public open house from 4-8 p.m. Admission is reduced for those hours to just $5 per person.

The Christmas gala will then be open to the public all through the holidays — from Nov. 20 to Dec. 31 — with the mansion will be open for general tours seven days a week, including Sunday through Thursday from 1-4 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 1-8 p.m.
